Sociologists examine social behavior in families, groups, organizations, communities and whole societies, as well as the complexities of connections between cultures and societies in the modern world. A student in the Sociology program at the College of Mount St. Joseph explores social change, social causes and the consequences of human behavior in various social and cultural contexts.

The Mount's Department of Behavioral Sciences offers a major in sociology that combines the research and applied foundations of sociology. It also complements career preparation in other areas such as business, religion, nursing, recreational therapy, or social work, especially as these professions return to community-based services.

The sociology curriculum has two emphases: criminal justice and community development. Program faculty include those who have extensive training and research interests in applied sociology, community development, social psychology, social structure, criminal justice, cultural diversity, international politics, and human ecology.

Many students elect to participate in the Mount's extensive cooperative education programs as a way to supplement their incomes while pursuing their academic goals. Placements in sociology have included transitional housing, research assistantships, community mental health agencies, social justice organizations, and some businesses.

Sociology is a great choice for a major if you are planning to go to law school.  See more choices at Pre-Professional Studies.
