Studying the Natural Sciences at the College of Mount St. Joseph is a great preparation for careers that require knowledge of scientific principles, but require less mathematics.
If you have questions about Natural Sciences at the Mount and would like to learn more, you can contact one of our professors directly.

Science at the Mount
In the Chemistry department, you will do your own original research, working closely with the faculty person that you choose. (Meet the Chemistry faculty). We maintain a wide variety of scientific instruments that are rare for a school of this size. You will learn to operate each of these instruments - gaining the hands-on problem solving experiences that you miss at a larger school.
Employers of our alumni have noticed - at the Mount you will learn how to learn, so that when you enter the workforce there are no obstacles that you can’t tackle through your perseverance and your desire for new knowledge.
The Natural Science major is offered through the Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences. We also offer degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and a dual major in Chemistry/Mathematics. A degree in Natural Sciences is designed to provide students with a core comptency in chemistry, supported by courses in mathematics, physics, and biology. This major requires less mathematics than the Chemistry and/or Biochemistry degree and is, therefore, not an appropriate choice for becoming a PhD scientist. For more information about the specific courses in the Natural Sciences major, see both the specific Natural Sciences Course List and a description of the additional Liberal Arts courses you may take, called our Core Curriculm.
Life at the Mount
The College of Mount St. Joseph is small...and that is our greatest strength. You will know each professor and they will know you. You will know all your classmates. When you have a question, you will have an answer quickly, easily, with no waiting or having to ‘take a number’ or stand in line.
We have a caring support structure for you - a tutor when you need one, a writing center to help you improve your ability to communicate, the Project EXCEL program for our learning disabled students, and a counseling center to help you through tough times.
We have a great community - great athletics so you can cheer for or participate in your favorite sport, the ability to travel the world through our experiential learning courses, and a vibrant creative community with an art gallery, a theatre, a recital hall, and a student newspaper.
A natural sciences major will graduate with well-rounded knowledge in a variety of scientific disciplines such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Geology, Botany, and Ecology.
