Mathematics majors at the Mount learn how to formulate and solve real world problems. This ability is developed through coursework that emphasizes creative and critical thinking as well as precise and accurate expression of solutions. They are prepared for any career that demands strong analytical abilities and problem solving skills. Our students are also well prepared for graduate studies.
The Mathematics program is offered to students of various needs and interests:
- Students who wish to enter some work-related area in which mathematics is applied, such as bioinformatics, computational science, engineering, finance, economics, operations research, statistics, or actuarial science;
- Students who wish to teach at the secondary or middle school levels.
- Students who wish to enter graduate school in mathematics or a related academic area.
- Students who desire to engage in critical thinking and problem solving.
Students will receive a broad-based education in mathematics that includes advanced study of algebra and calculus, the use of technology in mathematics, and a selection of courses in pure and/or applied mathematics.

Students seeking a major in mathematics must also participate in the Cooperative Education program. In addition, all department seniors must complete a research project in mathematics.
