Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of the properties of matter and the changes that matter undergoes.

A chemist seeks to answer questions such as:

How do we construct useful materials?

How do we design new medications?

How do we develop new energy technologies?

If you would like to learn more about Chemistry at the Mount, you can contact one of our professors directly.

You can also check us out on Facebook.

Career Opportunities in Chemistry

A degree in chemistry is excellent preparation for a wide variety of professional schools, including medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, law, and many others.

There are also many careers that you can pursue with no additional education. See the Chemistry Careers page for more information. If you would like to hear about one of our alumni, meet JJ.

Science at the Mount

In the Chemistry Department, you will do your own original research, working closely with a faculty member whom you choose. We maintain a wide variety of scientific instruments that are rare for a school of this size. You will learn to operate each of these instruments yourself – gaining the hands-on, problem-solving skills that you might miss at a larger school.

Employers of our alumni have noticed – at the Mount you will learn how to learn. When you enter the workforce, you will be very well-prepared.

The Chemistry major at the Mount is certified by the American Chemical Society and is offered through the Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences. We also offer degrees in Biochemistry, Natural Sciences, and a dual major in Chemistry/Mathematics. A degree in Chemistry is designed to provide students with a core competency in chemistry, supported by courses in mathematics, physics, and biology. For more information about specific courses, see the Chemistry Course List and a description of additional Liberal Arts courses that you may take, called our Core Curriculum.

Life at the Mount

The College of Mount St. Joseph is small…and that is our greatest strength. You will know your professors and they will know you. You will know all of your classmates. When you have a question, you will get an answer quickly and easily, without having to take a number or stand in line.

We have a caring support structure for you -  a tutor when you need one, a Writing Center to help you improve your communication skills, Project EXCEL for our learning disabled students, and a Wellness/Counseling Center to help you through any tough times.

We have a great community – great athletics so that you cheer for or participate in your favorite sport, the ability to travel the world through experiential learning courses, and a vibrant creative community with an art gallery, a theatre, a recital hall, and a student newspaper.
