A major in biology blends knowledge of basic scientific processes with an appreciation of the phenomenon of life. Requirements span a wide range of subjects, from microbiology and ecology to chemistry and special research projects in order to provide a solid scientific foundation. Qualified students are eligible for membership in Beta Beta Beta, the  Xi Gamma Chapter of the National Biology Honor Society. Members participate in activities such as regional and national research symposia which strengthen the learning gained through the biology major.

The Biology Department encourages undergraduate participation in biology research with the faculty and in faculty-approved external opportunities. To support the research experience, the department houses research facilities in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, bioanthropology, ornithology and entomology. State-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation provide unique research opportunities not typically found in a small college setting.

Biology is a great choice for a major if you are interested in a health profession. Biology faculty are represented on the Health Professions Advisory Committee, CHPAC, which guides students through the process of preparing for and applying to post-graduate schools in the health professions. The health professions include physician, dentist, pharmacist, physician assistant, optometrist, veterinarian, physical therapist, occupational therapist, podiatrist, and public health professionals.
