The Mount offers a variety of bands and instrumental ensembles that continue in the long tradition of music at the Mount. Participation in these ensembles is open to all College of Mount St. Joseph students, with the Mount Community Concert Band being open to all interested adult instrumentalists in the Greater Cincinnati area.
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is the premier instrumental ensemble, under the direction of Richard Elliot at the College of Mount St. Joseph. Drawing from traditional and contemporary band literature, the ensemble performs two concerts in the College Theatre each semester, as well as a variety of other on and off campus events. Membership in the band is open to all traditional College of Mount St. Joseph students. By participating in the Symphonic Band, you are eligible for a partial tuition remission. Rehearsals are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Lion’s Roar Band
Under the direction of Richard Elliott, the Lion’s Roar Band supports the College at every home football and basketball games, select away games, tournament games, and a variety of other on and off campus events. The Band performs a diverse selection of music ranging from current Top 40 to classical and Broadway. Membership in the band is open to all traditional College of Mount St. Joseph students. By participating in the Lion’s Roar Band, you are eligible for a partial tuition remission.
MSJ Jazz Ensemble
Under the direction of Jennifer Grantham, the MSJ Jazz Ensemble rehearses twice per week and performs throughout the year. Various jazz styles from the 1930’s through present day are performed and students have the opportunity to develop their improvisation skills. Membership in the ensemble is open to all College of Mount St. Joseph students.
MSJ Percussion Ensemble
The MSJ Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Richard Elliott, has developed a reputation for high quality performances and interesting programs. It is a year-round ensemble that rehearses on Tuesdays for two hours each week. The Percussion Ensemble performs a variety of music ranging from classic works for percussion to contemporary pieces. The ensemble also performs original compositions and arrangements written specifically for them. Membership in the ensemble is open to all College of Mount St. Joseph students. Mount Community Concert Band
The Mount Community Concert Band performs light classical and popular music. In addition to students at the Mount, membership in the Mount Community Concert Band is open to all interested adult instrumentalists in the Greater Cincinnati area. Under the direction of Kenny Bierschenk, the Band rehearses on Monday evenings and performs several concerts on and off campus each year. Choral Groups
College Chorale
The College Chorale is the college chorus that performs music from various periods and styles ranging from Renaissance madrigals to contemporary works. Performances each semester are popular events and the Chorale is a great opportunity to develop friendships and camaraderie associated with the joy of choral singing. Open to all College of Mount St. Joseph Students.
Mount Singers/Women’s Chorus
The Mount Singers is a small women’s chamber ensemble that performs a wide variety of music, ranging all the way from early Renaissance to popular and Broadway. Our small size makes sight singing and section leadership skills a must, but also allows us to have a close knit group and form great friendships. Entrance is by audition only- you will be tested on sight singing and the ability to hold your part with others singing around you. Previous choir experience is recommended.
Cincinnati Metropolitan Orchestra
The Cincinnati Metropolitan Orchestra is a community-based orchestra under the direction of David Allen. College of Mount St. Joseph students may participate in the orchestra for credit, gaining valuable orchestral experience playing with veteran musicians, many of whom are music educators in area schools.
