mlia = suggestive college student entertainment

having a snow day did end up turning in to me being sick so my week hasn't exactly been as productive as i'd prefer. however, today as the beginning of my weekend, i've read a lot of www.mlia.com pots and they have definitely given me some interesting ideas of how we college students can bring out the kid again whenever we're snowed in: and this is what i'm planning on doing tonight. build a dorm room fort. yes i said it. a fort. when is the last time you built a fort? that is my challenge tonight with my friends; to gather together as many blankets and pillows as possible and combine the furniture pieces to legit.  build a college dorm room fort. so this brings research. yea i'm still in college so i want to be educational on the matter.

now the music in this video slightly brings back the style of the 90's but i'm expecting something more. i'm talking backstreet boys and nysnc and perhaps even the spice girls. don't judge! well off to my childhood adventure. i will venture back in the near future to share my fasinating tale :-D

college student + snow day = kids @ heart

so getting snow days in college is definitely worth experiencing. waking up on a tuesday (worst part of the week) at 7am to get ready for a full day of classes is never entertaining to me. however, waking up at 7am and discovering a text sent at 6am that the college is closed for a snow day is always entertaining!

so what did i do next? i went back to bed! only to wake up in time for some lunch with friends. it was then that we turned in to little kids again and started planning our schemes for the day [[snowmen, snow angels, igloos, sledding, snow ball fight, etc.]] unfortunately this didn't totally work out as i had hoped because my body decided it didn't like the cold and in turn give me a cough and cold. not fun! but that didn't take away from our indoor plans. the rest of the night, however, included a whole lot of disney [+dreamworks]. we watched shrek 1 and 2, played disney scene it, as well as put together my disney panorama puzzle.

successful day? i think so!

Happy Snowy Days!

Hey everyone! Saying hello at the end of our school’s first snow day!

Sorry for writing you all so late. It’s after midnight over here! My day off wasn’t really all that much of a day off for me. I used it to put in a lot of extra time on a graphics project that’s gonna be due soon, and it’s a good thing I decided to work ahead. The project is a poster, and I decided to make my own letterforms for the header, and it turned out to be a great deal harder than I originally thought it was going to be. Between yesterday and today I’ve probably spent around 15 hours on the project, and that’s only on a draft!

Snow days at the Mount are cool, but kind of confining. The food court is closed, the Harrington center and the gym close very early, and the only source of food on campus is the dining hall, which is only open specific hours.  So between those times, you have to occupy yourself (Which I did with homework).  But there’s more people stuck on campus than you would normally encounter, so good luck finding an open pool table!

Anyway, this snow day wasn’t really a day off for me, as I had to spend it working VERY HARD on homework. I hope we get a snow day tomorrow too. One because I’d love the day off.  Two, because I had to run out tonight to grab some groceries…and the roads were bad. Like really bad! I don’t want my classmates from Indiana to have to drive through that!

Anyway, happy snow days, drive safe, and have fun!

RA... we know drama!!!

Last week was very trying for me but I am happy to say that I am back on track and I am begging my process of getting a head in my classes. This will take a lot of perseverance and not to mention weekends but I know that I can do it. I think the hardest thing about this semester was that I wasn’t as focused or as organized as I needed to be. I have planned all of my events for my floor events and some were really creative, as far as budget wise! Molly, another RA, and I are throwing a singles bash in the dorm, I was so happy to collaborate with her because this will give the both of our floors a chance to mingle with each other and we will invite other residents who are willing to show off their dance moves!

I am also planning Easter egg decorating, which will of course have free food but I know my residents loves to decorate our floor, especially when it’s the theme of a holiday! Being an RA has been really fun so far; but I have had many times when it has gotten in the way of things. Like if I am on duty I have to stay on campus for the whole night, so if my friends are going out, I have to suck it up and do my job. Or if someone needs to be written up, I have to play the responsible role and write them up because after all I have to look after a lot of students and ensure that everyone is having fun while being safe! But, overall I love being an RA and I have gotten so close to most of the girls on my floor that I feel like their big sister and I love that they all come to me for advice!

Your Dorm and You...a love story.

Hey everyone!

After my recent trip to Australia, I’m really still just now getting on my feet! Before I left, I pretty much took all my clothes and most of my stuff home from my dorm. So I’m still slowly bringing back the stuff I need here at school from home. I’ve got most of my clothes back here, and I’m starting to get most of my other stuff back too!

Living in dorm life is a delicate balance of what you need to have in your room and what you want. I love my room, and no mistake, but I live in one of the East Single Dorms. I think it’s about a 14 foot square, and it has a sink, desk, and wardrobe on one side, and a bed on the other side. So the name of the game is space. You want to have everything you need, and hopefully some of what you want.

I have a big art table at the foot of my bed. I don’t really need it, but with my being an art major, it certainly has it’s uses! Having a nice big table to spread out with all my sketches I think allows me to be more productive during the time I have to work on my homework. However, it is big, and my room isn’t! I have to work around it. I think it’s worth it, but I know a lot of my friends think my room is too cramped for comfort.

I have a confession to make… I’ve never posted pictures of my dorm room up here… because it’s always a mess!

But no more! This semester I’m trying to keep my room nice and clean! So! I’ve brought my last load of stuff over and over the next week or two I’m going to try to reorganize, in an effort to keep my room nice and clean! And hopefully I’ll even get it clean enough that I can snap a picture!

Anyway, I got class all day today so I better get back to it!

See you!

No Roommate? and lots of stuff to do

So today I saw my roommate for the first time in ages, and she was moving out. It’s kind of sad in a way because the one person who was forced to be my friend is moving on up, and out of my small double in 4 SouthEast and into a very large center suite. I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty jealous. I would kill for a private shower.

But on the bright side I finally cleaned my room! This may not seem like a big deal, but trust me it is. Ha! Ha! I can finally walk to mybed without worrying about slicing my foot open on something, Being an artmajor and having exacto blades everywhere, that is a legit worry.

Speaking of art, I have a lot of art homework to do,everyone thinks being an art major is so easy, but I have to warn you, its not! We may not have to write papers like everyone else, but we have art projects that take in excess of 25 hours to do, which is much longer than I’ve ever spent on a paper. Tonight I have to draw a room. A ROOM. A BOX. I’m so sick of drawing boxes its not even funny. All the other art classes are drawing horses and faces and landscapes, but no not us, we are still drawing boxes! BUT WAIT! We’re shading them now! So that makes it all okay. Next semester I’m not scheduling classes before 9am. I REFUSE. I value my sleep way too much. I nap all the time now that I’m in college. And the more I sleep the more I eat. Hello freshman 15 :D

Thirteen night of Halloween is on tonight! YAY BEETLEJUICE!I’m pretty excited about it. I love Halloween! It sucks I cant go to the Halloweendance! They ran out of spaces! I was so rattled! But its okay I’m going to have my own dance party, and by dance party I mean, sit in my dorm and watch Law and Order. And I’m okay with that. My fish died. I need to buy more. What a way to end my blog on a happy note. haha

Arrival!

Hey everyone! For those of you who may not know me, my nameis Tom, and I’m in my third year of college attending the College of Mount St.Joseph here in Cincinnai, Ohio! And I’m sooooooo glad to be back!

I’m sitting in my dorm room today after having moved in earlier today! And I’m sooo glad to be back in the dorms. Over the summer, mysister moved back home. My sister Mary Kay (we call her KK!) was living in asmall apartment that was very, very nice! But she decided early in the summerthat it was too small for her, her two cats, and my nephew, Ronny. So KK,Ronny, and the cats are back at my house.

I am actually the youngest of 4 children, so I grew up inthat same house with 6 people in it, and a boatload of animals. But now there’s5 adults (me being the youngest adult at 21), a 7 month old baby, a puppy, andSIX cats! This have just gotten a little crazy back home! So I think it’s bestfor me and my family to have one less person at home.

Things have changed a bit here at the Mount! For me at least. The last two years, I have lived in the Seton Center Suites, which are reallynice mini-apartments for two people. They have your own heat and AC, your ownbathroom with a shower, and a nice sink and a huge pantry/closet area. Well, that’s a thing of the past for me. I’ve decided this year to move into a singledorm. So I have a radiator (which I can’t control) and I no longer have AC… sothis should be interesting! I still have my own sink, but I now no longer havemy own bathroom. We have a big guys bathroom just across the hall which I sharebetween the 7 other guys living in this wing. I’ve never had to share abathroom with so many before, I hope it goes okay! I’ve already had a peek atthe showers, and they’re actually really really nice! I’ll tell you more aboutthe dorm later!

The good news is that 2 of the 7 guys that live down hereare good friends of mine. Paul (an editor on our school publication Dateline) and Jeff (president of the MSJ Symphonic Band) areboth guys I know very well. I look forward to hanging out with them more later!

And it’s almost 5 o’clock, which means dinner time is almostupon me here at the mount. So I’ll leave you guys until next time!

It’s great to be back! Can’t wait to tell you more about theMount!

The great MOVE OUT!

Hey guys!

Maaan, I’m bushed! I’ve been packing up for the past couple days, and it’s finally starting to look like I’ll be finished soon!

That’s right folks, end of the year means moving out of the dorms! And as I said to one of my classmates in the elevator…you never really realize how much shhhtuff you have until you have to pick it all up and move it! I’m taking stuff off my bookcase and I’m wondering why I have it?

Yes, book in particular I brought waaaay to many of. Books in particular are not fun to move because they’re HEAVY! Seriously, if you take a box and fill it with regular books and texts books and it starts to weigh a whole lot. I had to tote out two giant boxes filled with books. Like I have the complete signet classic of the collected works of Shakespeare. Why did I bring that to school? :D   I actually remember why I did, it was in case I needed it for quotes, but there are complete texts of Shakespeare online. I really didn’t need it!

Anyway, moving out of the dorm is much like living in an apartment. You don’t want to leave dings or scratches on anything, because then you have to pay for it. So I gotta be really careful when I’m moving stuff, especially when I’m moving the furniture back to where it belongs.

It is a bit easier this year. Last year, I brought, like… almost EVERYTHING from my room at home. And there really isn’t a need for most of it. For example, I brought almost all of my literature collection from home (like around 75 books), and I read maybe 3 or 4 of those particular books while I was at school. I also brought all my shirts from home, and I have sooo many of them. This year I considered more carefully, and now that I’m moving out, I’m glad I did. I’ve already got a big chunk of my stuff at home, and the rest of it I can probably take home in one load in my dad’s minivan. Last year it took us like 6 hours of hard work to get out of here, so this year should be a lot nicer!

Anyway, there’s still a ton to pack! So I’m going to have to leave you guys. And I’ll see you soon!

Dorm Life vs. Apartment Life

This semester I decided to live off campus to try and get a feel of being on my own and responsible for paying bills on time and buying my own food. My dad and I actually calculated everything out and it is actually a bit cheaper to live off campus at the Mount because room and board is somewhat high.

I am living with my good friend Megan who is a nursing student at the Mount. We have totally different schedules for each day but we always seem to meet up and have dinner together and talk about what happened that day at school. Dorm life was fun because pretty much everyone that you knew were just like a few steps away from you to ask them about homework or just to see what is going on. I also liked the fact that you always knew that you safe because of campus police always around to protect you.

But on the other hand, the Mount has taught me a few tricks about safety during Safety Week, so that I can use them when they are not around. Also I liked that all your resources for your classes were just a walk away. As for living off campus, there are some perks too. Some would include: having no rules to follow, whicn do not get me wrong can be good sometimes, you learn how to be responsible, and the feeling of independence. These can be very helpful when you graduate from college and you are out on your own. That is my big fear. THE REAL WORLD!!!!

Please keep reading and hope you enjoy!!!

WELCOME BACK!!!!

My summer went by so fast I am still trying to process the fact that school has started. I didn’t take that long for me to move into my dorm because this time I knew what to bring and what not to bring. I love my room and my roommate, my roommates name is Claire and she is an Art major. She pretty much was the brains in putting our room together. We bunked the beds, got two bright green comfy chairs, a rainbow colored rug and went from there!

It feels so good to be back in school because I got a chance to see all of my friends and I love my classes… so far. Since this is my sophomore year I know my classes are going to be, not hard, but more time consuming. I know that I will have more papers to do, more books to read but I am okay with that because I know that all of this work that I am doing is going to pay off when I get into my profession. This year I really have to work on my time management because I am the secretary for bsu (black student union) I am also a part of the Mount Singers which is the Mounts all girls’ choir, I will be working two jobs; I am a jeweler at Sears and I am a Lifeguard at Powel Crosely YMCA. And on top of all of that I have all of my classes to worry about so this will definitely be an interesting year but I am so ready for it!
