Advisin' y'all!

Hey everyone! It’s October here at the Mount! You know what that means?

Well it means a lot of things, but most important to students here, it’s advising season. And that means planning for the next semester! I’ll let you guys in on the process, especially since I have an appointment with my advisor tomorrow!

Here at the Mount we register for classes online. Our personal schedules, as well as the class schedules for the entire school, are made online. We still have course books that are printed on paper, but I’ve heard the school is in the process of phasing those out, which I think is a good thing. Because the moment those books are printed, they’re out of date. Classes here at the Mount very frequently change information in the middle of the advising season. In fact, course times and classrooms can change all the way up to the day before that class begins.

That’s not to say that changes happen like that a lot. But I very frequently have at least one course that has changed rooms from the time I set up my schedule to the time the class actually starts.

After we pick out our classes, we meet with our advisor, and they review our class choices. If they agree that we’re taking a schedule that’s right for where you are in your degree, then they approve that schedule.

After that, you get online and you fight to the death for your classes!!!

No no, not really. Each class has a specific day to register. For example, I don’t know the exact date, but the senior class? They’ve registered already. I’m a Junior, and my day to register is this Thursday. The computer does a random lottery, and half the class gets to start registering at 6 am and the other half at 6:30. Awesomely for me, I got 6 am this time, where I’ve usually gotten 6:30 in the past! You wanna be earlier rather than later, because classes fill up to their capacity, then close! So if enough seniors wanna take a specific class, it makes it hard to get. For example, Ceramics with Professor Korte. EVERYONE wants to take that class!  If you’re a freshman, you’re not going to get in. That’s the way it goes.

Speaking of classes and everything! I still gotta finish off my own schedule before I meet with my teacher! I’ll see you guys soon!

From One Season to Another

Hey guys.

I am sad to report that the Black Llamas (my intramural soccer team) posted their first loss to close the regular “season”.  We still get to play for first place in the playoffs, but it ruins our perfect season. I’m placing the blame on the fact that I have been watching my weight for my first wrestling tournament this weekend and haven’t walked through the doors at Chipotle in quite some time. Bottom line, we’ve been slacking on our training and I’ll be sure to get one of those burritos first thing when I get back from my tournament.

On a lighter note, advising season began last week and scheduling for classes next semester begins over the next few days.  This means that the semester is almost over! But that’s not the only good thing about advising season. Since I’m in the Education Department, I need to fulfill course requirements for both my major, History, and for the Education Department. After not looking at the course maps for each department for a while, I tend to forget what all I need to get done still before I graduate.  So when advising comes around, and I meet with both my advisors, I get a mental refreshment on the remaining course loads for my time here at the Mount.  And this semester I was pleasantly surprised! I wasn’t supposed to graduate on time due to a change in majors, but I have caught up my classes and am now on my way to graduating in four years. That’s great news! I won’t have to fork over an extra semester of tuition!  And I owe all this to my advisors. I sort of bounced around with my major advisors because I changed majors, then my history advisor was on sabbatical so I had a stand in. Now, I have my usual history advisor. I also have my Adolescent Young Adult (AYA) Education advisor that has really helped me stay on track and get things taken care of on time.

If any of my advisors read this, Jim, Buffy, Dr. Lynch, and Dr. West, thanks a lot and I appreciate the hard work you all have done to keep me on track!

To the rest of you, I’ll get back to ya next week!
